Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some mollusks as an inner shell layer; it is also what makes up pearls. It is very strong, resilient, and iridescent. Mother of Pearl has different hues depending on which type of pearl oyster it came from. Abalone is similar to Mother of Pearl and also comes in a variety of colors. No animals were killed to make this jewelry. The animals die either from natural causes or for food purposes.
